For those in the carwash business things have changed over the past three decades. There is more competition, issues with labor supply, more regulation and a more demanding consumer. It is said that "victory goes to the bold" and indeed, nothing could be more true than in the carwash industry - consider if you will a carwash that offers a 72-hour rain check?
In the summer time in Sunny Arizona before the monsoons it might be a safe bet or in the Deserts in California, but what about the rest of the country? Sure summer time the rewards beat out the risks, but what about in the winter time, is it safe or will it cause financial ruin, increased costs in labor, soap and water? Well, it just so happens that the bet pays off most often. But how can this be?
Simple, because the 72-hour rain check stipulates that the patron must return the day after the rain to retrieve their rain-check, thus limiting the number of those cashing in on the deal. In fact, less than 20% actually come back to claim it, yet most of the 100% that came in on a cloudy day would not have come in if the 72-hour rain check were not in place. It is a numbers game and as bold as it sounds it is a sound business tactic.
Do I recommend a 72-hour rain check for all carwashes? No, but I do recommend it in many cases such as the foggy springs and falls along the Pacific Coast or all those forecasted rain days of less than 70%. I think you should consider this marketing strategy and I thank you for listening. Sincerely, Lance.
